Common Pauraque
These medium sized nightjars fly low to the ground toward dusk and through the night eating small insects. In the morning they lie on the ground sleeping sometimes very close to trails as was the case with this one. This bird was only 3-4 feet off of a trail at Estero Llano Grande State Park south of Weslaco, Texas near the Mexican border.
