The "Mona Lisa" gunman
This mural, located in Hopewell Crescent, Belfast depicts the link between three of the main Loyalist paramilitaries: the Ulster Defence Union, the Ulster Defence Association and the Ulster Freedom Fighters. Augustus Andrew "Gusty" Spence Gusty Spence, a leader of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and leading loyalist politician in Northern Ireland who was one of the first UVF members to be convicted of murder, is shown on the right. What is notable about this mural is that no matter where the viewer stands in the square, the UFF gunman appears to "follow" them with his rifle. Also of note is the transcript on the smaller wall to the right which records a report of the manifesto for the proposed formation of the Ulster Defence Association, dated Friday, March 17th 1893, London.
