Walking along Greenwich Foot Tunnel (2)

Designed by Sir Alexander Binnie and constructed by Cochrane & Sons for the London County Council (L.C.C.).

Work began on the tunnel in June 1899 which led under the River Thames between Greenwich Pier and the Isle of Dogs and London's Docklands, comprising the areas of Millwall and Poplar.

The project replaced the ferry service which proved to be expensive and was very unreliable.

The tunnel opened in August 1902 and was 1,215ft long and 50ft deep, with glazed domes covering the entrances / exits. Helical staircases lead down to the walkway and by 1904 two elevators were added.

The elevators were upgraded in 1992 and lastly in 2012.

Many tourists frequently use the tunnel to cross from Greenwich to Island Gardens, where the photographers among them, can take panoramic pictures of the Royal Naval College.
