Ex Burton Fell, Warcop
More than 130 Army medics, Regular and Reserve, have been battling freezing Cumbrian temperatures on a gruelling exercise designed to test their ability to work anywhere in the world.
Exercise Burton Fell saw full time soldiers of 3 Medical Regiment, and around 30 soldiers from its two Reserve units, thrown into simulated battles where they had to stabilise, evacuate and treat casualties under simulated attack.
Personnel spent days living and working under canvas deep within Cumbria’s Warcop military training area in temperatures as low as -2 °C . They worked with actors, many of them amputees, and medical effects specialists to simulate some of the most traumatic injuries they might face on military operations.
3 Medical Regiment has its headquarters in Preston, Lancashire, but draws staff from across the north of England. It provides first aid, resuscitation and ambulance transport to front-line forces. The Regiment’s 64 Squadron is based in Chorley, Lancashire, while its 251 Squadron is based in Sunderland.
Exercise Burton Fell was the first time that the Regiment’s Regular and Reserve soldiers had worked together on such a scale. They will work together again on a similar exercise in Kenya later this year and then be expected to deploy on operations together anywhere around in the world
