- A frond is a large, divided leaf. In both common usage and botanical nomenclature, the leaves of ferns are referred to as fronds. New leaves typically expand by the unrolling of a tight spiral called a crozier or fiddlehead fern.

 

- Fern leaves show an alternate pattern: each leaf arises at a different point (node) on the stem.
