- Asclepias tuberosa is a species of milkweed native to eastern North America. It is a perennial plant growing to 0.3–1 metre tall, with clustered orange or yellow flowers from early summer to early autumn. The leaves are spirally arranged, lanceolate, 5–12 cm long, and 2–3 cm broad.
Genus name honors the Greek god Asklepios the god of medicine.
This plant favors dry, sand or gravel soil, but has also been reported on stream margins. It requires full sun.
It is commonly known as butterfly weed because of the butterflies that are attracted to the plant by its color and its copious production of nectar. It is also the larval food plant of the Queen and Monarch butterflies. Hummingbirds, bees and other insects are also attracted.

Asclepias tuberosa bloeit vanaf juni en wordt ongeveer 50 tot 60 cm hoog. Van nature komt Asclepias tuberosa voor op droge graslanden in Noord-Amerika van Zuid-Ontario en New York tot Minnosota, Colorado en Arizona. Ook in de zuidelijke staten Florida en New Mexico is deze variabele soort aanwezig.
De stengels van Asclepias tuberosa staan meestal rechtop en zijn ruwbehaard. Asclepias tuberosa heeft een knolvormige wortelstok. De standplaats van Asclepias tuberosa dient droog en zonnig te zijn.
Hoewel in Amerika de plant een 'onkruid'plant is, is hij bij ons meestal maar tweejarig. Het is een heel kleurige plant met kleine oranje, rode of gele bloemen op veelbloemige schermen. De plant groeit op zowel natte en droge grond en wordt door veel vlinders bezocht. In bloei een schitterende plant. Het is ook een goede snijbloem.
