My original idea for this project came from the striking image of the face of a child who had experienced extreme hunger during a famine in Somalia. I wanted to capture the image of his face to convey the hopelessness of the situation of many vulnerable women and children around the world. To me, injustice against children is the most alarming, because by their nature they are so helpless and free from fault, but are too often the ones endangered. The fact that hunger is such a basic human need and such a nonexistent problem in most of the world makes the problem all the more shameful in my opinion. I tried to keep the painting simple, and keep the focal point on the baby’s face, with the addition of his emaciated mother to make the issue clearer. I really tried to transfer the exact facial expression and I was happy with my final result. I was also pretty satisfied with the simplicity of the rest of the work. I believe I achieved my purpose in clearly conveying my social justice issue.
