Details
The goal of this series of images was to seek interesting photos from a non-optimal location (too far away, partially obscured view) using sub-optimal equipment (a slow camera with a dim lens). The fastest aperture, lowest useful ISO and low shutter speed were used to maximize color information in the RAW file.
This group concentrates on the reflections seen in the windows behind the performers. The perspective is lower than what was seen directly and gives a different view of the drumming style and stance. Early evening outside light was bright, allowing the background to show through the image. Later, the outside was lit either by moonlight or dim artificial lighting (with a blue cast) and did not disappear completely. Reflections are apparent from the interior and exterior panes of glass.
Technical details
Photographed in available light. Raw files were generally exposed for foreground elements, rendering the reflections 2-3 stops underexposed. Aggressive processing (Adobe Lightroom) involved increasing exposure 3-5 stops, adjusting highlights and shadows, then using the 'curves' tool to darken the black edge of the spectrum. Desaturating blue reduced the distracting effect of night-time exterior lighting. Aggressive noise reduction (Lightroom, Noiseware) was necessary.
