Coke Ovens geologic formations at Colorado National Monument, Grand Junction Colorado

Colorado National Monument is a spectacular park located on a high desert plateau of western Colorado near the Utah border. There are magnificent views of deep canyons, towering rock formations and abundant wildlife.

These interesting sandstone formations carved by wind and erosion are named the “Coke Ovens” because of their resemblance to the beehive ovens used historically in Europe and the Americas for burning coal to create coke, which was a fuel used to make iron ore.
