Slipper Orchid

Slipper orchids are so named because of the petal formed like a pouch at the base of the flower. This pouch is actually an elaborate trap for insects which guide them up into the reproductive parts of the flower, first ensuring that they get pollen attached to their backs as they climb out, and then crawl under the stigma to deposit the pollen, and allow the flower to produce seed. The slippery surface inside most of the pouch ensures that they must climb up to exit, via the back of it up an area of hairy and warty surface.
