Eltringham Evening

66733 catches the late evening sun as it hauls the 6E70 Greenburn to Cottam P.S. loaded coal train along the Tyne Valley at Eltringham, on the evening of the 27th June 2018.

This was the site of one of the more short lived stations on the Tyne Valley line. Mickley (named after the larger village a little further south of Eltringham), opened in 1859 to serve a colliery here, and closed as early as 1914 when a landslip resulted in the line being slewed across the site of the platform. Usage was never high with services limited to Hexham and Newcastle market days.

Despite the short lifespan of the station, the road leading down to this location from Mickley is still called 'Station Road'.
