Training Its Replacement

Another view of the Salem Industrial Drive crossing, giving a better view of the connector track between the old Virginian (foreground) and Norfolk & Western lines (in the background, now combined into Norfolk Southern). The US&S position light signals were introduced when the Pennsylvania Railroad was in control of the N&W, and are being replaced with a Southern Railway style system. Since the merger of N&W and Southern, most of the new managers and executives have come from the Southern side, along with their ideas on how to run a railroad.

Just as the Virginian, Wabash, and Nickle Plate disappeared into the N&W corporation, so is N&W losing its identity, with the actual corporation having been dissolved a few years ago.
