Dune Top Sunset, Porter County, Indiana
My scout troop camped at the dunes this past weekend. In my tent on Friday night, I could hear the waves pounding in. Saturday turned out to be one of those perfect September days. Warm in the sunshine with a gentle, cooling breeze. I took off for a short excursion while the kids were finishing dinner KP. A small group of folks had brought folding chairs down on the beach to watch the sunset. I headed off along the dunes, looking for a bit of solitude. The sunset on the drive up on Friday night (watching through my rear view mirror, heading east) was particularly spectacular. I was hoping that with the forecast of rain on Sunday, that the approaching front might also make for a beautiful sunset on Saturday evening. I was not disappointed. As the sun was setting, a group of coyotes deep in the dunes to my left yipped and yapped before breaking into a long group howl. Some of them sounded like pups, very enthusiastic and a little bit "off" from the rest of group. 3 image HDR (-2/3, -2 2/3, +1 1/3).
The sun is already swinging its way south for winter, so the famous downtown Chicago skyline visible from the dunes is actually behind the tree on the right. I was able to use this cool website:
www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/grad/solcalc/
to figure out the the sun was actually setting near East Chicago, Indiana from where I was located. It's a cool tool. Try it out.
