The Storm of Reckoning, Tales of Old
The news of the murder of eminent Carolean lord Rein van Helborg during the Great Joust spread like a wildfire through the Pale. Years of malcontent reached a boiling point with the event.
The promised extra autonomy for the Pale had been withdrawn in the aftermath of the Great War, with taxes raised instead to ease the financial strain on royal coffers. In a miscalculated effort to bring more Caroleans in the embrace of the Faith, king Raul the Pious implemented the much-loathed Temple Tax, aimed at non-Faith related temples and their adherents, hoping they would shut down and convert.
It was an act seen as near-betrayal of the ages old pact between the inhabitants of the Pale and the King, which granted a certain degree of autonomy in return for loyalty. The Caroleans had bled for the King in his wars, but now the Crown no longer held up its part of the deal.
Enraged Caroleans took to the streets, first in Riesmond, then followed by Essen and other major cities in the Riverlands and beyond in the Pale. Spurred on by the sermons and speeches of some infamous seditious Carolean rune priests, such as the rebel Birger Jung who had long been preaching against the Crown's interests and in favor of Carolean autonomy and religious freedom, the rioters crashed into temples of the Faith - often built by the Crown as symbol of their power - and smashed the statues of the gods there. Rakes and axes tore apart the pictures and relics of saints. Books were burned in defiance of the King and his enforced Faith.
Like a wave or storm sweeping over the Pale, the event became known as the Storm of Reckoning by Caroleans, or theGreat Defacement by the Mardierian royalists.
While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact start for the long-spanning Fall of Mardier, the Queensbridge Murder and subsequent Storm of Reckoning are certainly key moments in Carolean history that served as catalysts for the eventual downfall.

A small build I have been working on on-and-off and didn't get around to posting yet. Even though interest has died down, I might still build and share a small story every now and then.
While I was building, I kept on thinking "this reminds me of something else". So I started going through my faves and found this build by BardJaskier. So yeah, definitely credits to him for the original build, as mine basically ended up as a mini version of his.
