The Campagnards of Eranos

The Oleonder campagnard , or 'country man', is a skilled horseman with a reputation of bravery and unruliness. More than simply a profession, these free spirits are a specific type of people found living on the plains of Eranos in south Oléon, where they earn their pay as cattlemen for wealthy local seigneurs who own large estates and huge swathes of lands there.

Only sparsely populated, the rolling grasslands of Eranos proved to be an attractive safe haven for brigands, thieves, criminals and adventurers who sought a way out of the more rigorous and strict life of the northern provinces and larger cities. The Champs Fauves, or 'Wild Fields', are a dangerous and rugged place, where one mostly has to depend on their own skills to survive. It is a place of little authority, but great freedom if one is willing to live a hard life.

Over time the pockets of brigands evolved into small communities of skilled horsemen who, unwanted by most of the civilized world, found work tending the great herds of cattle and semi-feral horses that roamed the Wild Fields.

The skills derived from their work and equestrian lifestyle makes the campagnards to be highly sought after mercenaries to fight for the Crown, but their independent and anti-authoritarian nature compels them to stay out of royal affairs. They are no friends of the King in Granoléon and their loyalty lies largely with their own folks and communities, and to the local seigneur they work for.

In time of need they will ride out to protect the herd or the Lord's estate from cattle raiders or bandits - mostly Varcosian intruders who have sneaked across the border into Oléon. The campagnards have built up quite the reputation as excellent lancers in this manner.

Campagnards are known as somewhat conservative and devout, with their own code of honor and morals - which is often seen as backward by other Oléonders. While the mischievous Pan is their chief patron deity, the campagnards are known for elaborate celebrations of their dead in the name of Hades. Large parades and feasts are held in memory of the deceased, celebrating the lives of those lost.

Campagnards are also known for their style of dress, which is pragmatic yet iconic to other Oléonders. They wear wide-brimmed hats to protect them from the sun and sturdy pants tucked in leather riding boots. Their shirts are simple, often white and around their necks they wear the ubiquitous neck-kerchief. What truly sets them apart from other typical herders, is the wearing of wide sashes around the waist - to carry items or simply as decoration or cloth for sleeping, and the poncho: a garment likely adapted and evolved from the zupans and kaftans worn by some Varcosian or Ghaskin horsemen.

Another entry into the series looking at the small-folk of the Oléonese outback and backwaters. Wasn't meant to be a series, but once you have two entries it's a series. Right? Don't have specific plans for further installments, but you never know.

These guys might pop up somewhere in the future ...
