Notes from the German Province, August 2014
"Fränkische Schweiz", the "Riesenburg/Giants castle" in the upper Wiesent valley, extremely picturesque and truly dramatic rock site, appealing to our romantic intuitions and made accessible by stairs and railings. Near this site, you find the steep and winding path leading up to the heights form the valley; until not so long ago, all water had to be carried up there because on the dry karst heights, all water drained immediately to the valley below.
- Notes from a trip through the German province: via the "Fränkische Schweiz", romantic beauty with picturesque rock formations, fossils from the Jura period, villages and castles climbing the hills, and the bleaker "Thüringer Wald"- aptly coloured by the slate that used to be quarried there, both dark and shining silverly - to the old university city of Jena. Many of these places have a deeply personal meaning to me. It has been a moving and disconcerting experience to have been back there on a brief trip.
