Objective 2: Creative Exposure
The camera mode (P, Tv, Av, M) and why I chose it: I set the camera to aperture priority mode to have more control over depth of field and aperture settings.
f stop used and why: f/5.6 was used because I wanted to put the focus only on the front chain-link. The background needed to be blurred to make the photo less busy. This f stop gives a very shallow depth of field to emphasis the front chain-link.
Shutter speed used and why: 1/800 was used to adjust to the lighting so there would not be too much (slow shutter) or too little (fast shutter) light; changed with f stop. Also, I wanted a crisp shot with no blur.
ISO used and why: ISO 200 was used because I was shooting outdoors. This resulted in less noise and grain in the photo and a slightly slower shutter speed.
Exposure compensation and why it was used: 0 was used because the shot was already correctly exposed.
Focal length and why: The focal length was 55mm. I used the longest focal length possible to capture the detail of the metal without having to go to close to the subject or the camera may not focus.
Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design
The principles of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Balance – It is asymmetrical balance. The visual weight is equally balanced around the photo. The main focal point (which is quite visually heavy and near the bottom right point of interest) is balanced by the many other smaller chain-links in the background
Movement – The eye is drawn through the photo by the wires and the supporting pole that runs through diagonally. First we look at the main chain-link and then the pole leads our eye to the other links in the background.
Emphasis – The focal point is the very front chain-link in the fence. I wanted to make sure that one stood out from the rest by using a very shallow depth of field and proper focus. Simplicity also added to the emphasis.
Pattern/repetition – Pattern and repetition is shown because of the similar shapes and feel of the many links in the fence as they run diagonally through the photo.
The elements of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Line –The metal wire links create diagonal and curved lines. It gives am overall strong feeling of movement (diagonal) and a slight feeling of charm (curved). The straight line created by the pole gives a rigid, strong feel too.
Form – Form is shown by the shadows cast on parts of the front links. It makes those wires look more three-dimensional.
Space – There is a little more positive than negative space in this photo. The border covered up the original negative space and left a black faded edges which is somewhat counted as negative space.
Texture – The wires have a knotted, tangled texture. The ends of the metal wires have a rough texture.
Value/tone - This photo has many different shades of gray in it, including black and some white. I got rid of the distracting specs of colour to emphasis the gray tones.
Objective 4: Lighting
Type of lighting and why: Soft, side lighting was used to help bring out a 3-D form in the chain-link wires so it would not just be a 2-D shape. Very close to back lighting as you can see that there are some shadows close to the front creases of the subject. ---natural lighting also
Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)
Corrections/adjustments made:
-Resized to upload to Flickr
-adjusted levels a little to add contrast (and contributes to value/tone)
-a slight unsharp mask was applied to define edges
I converted it to black and white to lose some of the distracting colour (browns) in the background and to give the metal a cool and clean feel.
-I created a vignette border to give the edges a softer focus. I chose black because it works with the cold, hard metal theme. Vignette border: added new layer, filled black, layer mask to punch through to reveal the original photo, used paint brush (hardness: very soft) to make more natural
Objective 6: Critiquing
I really like how this photo shows movement throughout. The black and white is a great colour choice for this metal fence theme. If I was to do something next time, it would be to adjust the exposure compensation maybe a third up to make the white in the photo brighter.
