Student debt - 1950 style
Positively the last document regarding my father-in-law's post war arrangements which I am going to post here.
It tells us a lot about inflation that paying off a debt of £57 was a great relief in 1950.
Both my in-laws had taken out loans to finance their higher education in the late 30s, and had agonised about getting married in 1942 with those debts around their necks. By the end of the war they found themselves still alive and kicking, with three small children to bring up. The prof and his sisters remember more dissent on the question of whether Edgar should be a schoolteacher for a three years, thus not having to pay back his loan, or whether he should pursue his budding career in the Scientific Civil Service, than at any later time. It is worth noting that at that time they did not know that their children would all have their tuition fees in British higher education paid, together with substantial contributions to living expenses, and they were already planning to foot those costs themselves. Alas, small children in the UK today cannot look forward to such support.
