Art 4 peace
Art 4 peace healing project is a sole initiative of m2 art centre outreach projects that revolves around the role of art in the community.
The project involves artists and the communities in kibera, in relation to various social and political issues affecting the society. To apply art as a tool towards reconciliation and harmony, through the various projects that are undertaken focused on both gender and age.
In Kenya, art as a subject has been scrapped off the education system, so kids have been denied the chance of expression. We have carried out programs such as
•Art lessons i.e. Mural paintings and art classes in the studio on weekends and holidays.
•Art healing projects e.g. during and after the post election violence, body mapping workshops for depression due to life with h.i.v e.t.c
The projects are basically conducted through workshops, public art forums and presentations. Enhancing art and nurturing talents remains our key goal while kids are our prime centre of attention.
Examples of some art 4 peace projects are:
RUINS PEACE PROJECT:
In 2007 the post election violence erupted. Kibera was one of the worst hit areas in Kenya. Kibera was not spared in the ethnic battles either, and even after the seize fire, the trauma was very great. So the m2 artists embarked on a healing project that was to bring back peace and harmony through arts.
The project involved artists and kids painting on the ruins, peace murals and graffiti by m2 artists and solo 7, hand painted peace T shirts and peace discussions.
The response was huge from children who previously played war songs’ games, to children who painted flowers and peace, love and unity symbols together on the streets and ruins of Kibera.
The ruins were turned from street toilets to street museums; in essence this was basically the biggest success of art for peace healing project. That was not only appreciated by the locals but also by the national and international community.
The other continuing project is the CHILDREN ART LESSONS. The aim of the lessons is not only to teach the children to draw and paint but also to let the child explore and work with materials found within his or her environment. To make recycled art.
When we started in 2004 we used to work with around 15 children aged 4 years to 13 years. And over the years the number has risen to over 50 kids. The lessons range from indoor activities to outdoor activities like group murals.
