El Palazzo Medici-Riccardi fou la tradicional seu del poder dels Medici a partir del 1444 i fins no es varen traslladar al Palazzo Vecchio i el Palazzo Pitti al 1540-1549, aleshores ja com a ducs hereditaris. The Palazzo Medici-Riccardi was the traditional seat of Medici power from 1444 until they moved to the Palazzo Vecchio and the Palazzo Pitti between 1540 and 1549—by which time they had become hereditary dukes. The old palace was sold to the Riccardi family, thereby acquiring its current name. It serves as a model for Renaissance-era palaces throughout Europe.
