Scenes where Roman Polanski's masterpiece The Pianist was filmed in 2001. Although it was partly filmed at the famous Babelsberg Studios in Berlin, Polanski found untouched corners of Warsaw where he could shoot the film "in situ".
A large part of the scenes filmed in Warsaw were in fact filmed in the Praga-Polnoc district, on the eastern bank of the Vistula River. This district fell into Soviet hands before the Nazis destroyed everything they could of the city in the autumn of 1944, and therefore retains the authentic atmosphere of the time. The filming focused on Stalowa, Konopacka and Mała streets.
This is specifically where a couple of Wehrmacht officers (not SS, Wehrmacht, where there were also anti-Semites) beat Wladislaw Szpilman's father for not saluting them and force him to get off the sidewalk to walk in the gutter:

Here, filming in Stalowa street was ideal for Polanski, as it has real tramway rails, so they could use vintage trams to great efect in many scenes.

This photo is part of a trip through central Poland, focused especially on the most tragic moments of the Holocaust and World War II, which devastated Poland like few places, but which at the same time contrasts with the incredible rebirth of the country up to the present day.
