Colonial Chemistry
The Horton House on Jekyll Island was built in 1743. The colonists burned oyster shells(CaCO3) to make lime(CaO) and then mixed lime, water, sand, and oyster shells. This mixture was poured into forms where it hardened into "tabby".
Major William Horton also used his chemistry skills in his brewery right down the road where he brewed Georgia's first beer.
