Foulspawn are what happens when the twisted influence of the Far Realm warps normal mortals into horrible, foul creatures, each one more horrible than the last. When Foulspawn were solidified as a concept, several older creatures with the same idea - like the Dolgrim and Dolgaunt - got folded into their ranks, and it absolutely fit without a problem.
