Harvester Vigil (Feniseca tarquinius) R5188 Mohican SP, OH PFN
Harvester (Feniseca tarquinius) male territorial behaviour.
Mohican State Park, Ohio, USA.
May 21, 2005.
I love the way this little guy is craning his neck--standing guard on his territory. Every few seconds he'd chase all comers away, regardless of species, then return to his post. Like many other male butterflies, he defends his territory vigorously, hoping a female will take interest.
Some bugs just have more personality than others. Harvesters have character out the wazoo. They're curious by nature and so much fun to watch. Sometimes they'll even interact with you. Several times when they've come check me out, they've landed on my outstretched hand.
