Peeing Butterfly, Part 1: Green Comma peeing sequence R5349 RMNP PFNa

Green Comma (Polygonia faunus), Peeing Sequence, Part 1.

Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada.

August 12, 2008

This is the first of a sequence of photographs I took after observing this butterfly's behaviour. (I have also seen Mourning Cloak butterflies do this while sipping sap from a wounded tree.)

After 10 or 20 minutes of drinking, the butterfly opened its wings, thrust its abdomen outward, and squirted a drop of waste away from its body.

This process took less than 1 second from start to finish.

My camera wasn't on a tripod, so I had to stand there at the ready, waiting for the moment. @@
