Bernie Tuffs - Finding My Way

Finding My Way (View large if poss as FB really darkens the blues especially)

This piece started out as just playing with some of this month's content from the course - putting the butterflies on poles seemed to call to me for some reason! As did the little bird!

I thought at first it was a going to be a representation of me, still trying to find my way in the world, being pulled from all angles by different causes, different needs of others...

But then, as the light and colour developed I realised it was more than that.

The little bird is alone - the only one of his kind left. His home, behind him, burns - sparks rain down. The red smoke drifts into the dark blue night sky and the glow from the fire lights his path.

He walks away from his home, towards a new life. not knowing what he will find.

He expects the best.

What will he find? A land where all of nature, all life is valued, loved and protected?

Or a land where animals are seen as merely entertainment for others? Seen as food, as nothing more than objects to be used and abused?

The butterfies on poles are so unnatural. Butterflies should be flying free! Flitting around where they please! Imstead they are pinned to sticks in an attempt to create some kind of weird beauty from somethng that is entirely false and contrary to beauty.

The innocent and vulnerable little bird has no idea what he is walking into...

These were my feelings about the piece. I'm thinking it comes from seeing so much destruction of the planet through fire, human activity, neglect and greed.

Locally, I'm joining with oithers trying to do something to stop the destruction of our green spaces and the loss of wildlife. There are many good people fighting for the environment and awareness is being raised.

Yet there is still not enough talk about the use of innocent animals for food. The intensive farming takes it toll on us all, one way or another, not solely on the poor animals.

The abuse, the death they suffer shames humankind. We should be better. The effects of intensive farming of so many animals drastically affect our environment. And food that could be given to humans has to be fed to the animals instead. Our earth has billions of "farm animals" being fed daily whilst humans sit with empty stomachs and no clean water.

I think this piece was some kind of processing of those thoughts and emotions! I don't feel it is 'dark' or depressing. To me it's a statement of fact in art form.

If you want to help this little fella have a better life in a new home where he is loved and valued, speak out for the animals, for the environment! Attend the protests or support them in other ways, eg sharing information on FB, if you aren't able to attend. Write and send in objections when your local Authority, like ours, repeatedly approves planning for more concrete boxes at the cost of beautiful green spaces with mature trees. Stop eating meat/dairy/eggs - and read up about the emissions, the abuse, the kind of death these innocents suffer. Watch 'Earthlings', 'Forks over Knives' or 'Cowspiracy'. Humans are better than being slaves to their tastebuds! We have strong willpower, strong determination if we would all just use it! If you believe little ones, like this bird, and bigger ones, are here with us not for us, that they deserve a life free from abuse and deserve to be treasured, you can do it!

If anybody would like any help on adopting a Vegan lifestyle, I'm happy to help in any way I can! Just ask! xx
