One of the drawbacks of travelling is you have a tendency to lose track of the current music scene. I’m sounding trendier than I am here. I’ve never been very up to date with the tunes of the day. My friends at university accused me of owning a Backstreet Boys album. This obviously wasn’t true – it was a Boyzone album.
My mother used to play Motown records and other classic tracks around the house when I was younger. I suppose that instilled in me an appreciation for older music. I’m a big Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra & Don McLean fan.
At school as a teenager I avoided the question of what type of music I listened to by saying ‘Anyone really, I like all music’. What this meant was, ‘I don’t want to admit that I like Elton John’. Elton John is gay. In English high schools the worst thing you could be accused of was being gay. I like Elton John = I am a gay.
Hopefully things are a little bit different nowadays.
I’ve had a number of great modern bands on repeat for the last two years. It’s essential that every traveller has an On The Road playlist.
On trains I go for something a bit more upbeat. Some good examples of this are the bands The Gaslight Anthems and Mando Diao. On planes, however, I go for a chilled vibe – Faster music means action, action means plane crash – no thanks. A little bit of Mumford and Sons or Ray Lamontagne fills this gap nicely and leaves me feeling in a safe place.
We’ve had BBC Radio in this new house. The speakers in the kitchen play out the popular tracks of today while we work. I’ve extended my playlist since then with some fantastic newish bands, my favourite of whom are Of Monsters and Men.
I’m still lacking, though, and would welcome any suggestions you may have for good travelling tunes.

This is not an HDR photo. It’s a single middle exposure RAW, edited in Lightroom. I used the Recovery for the slightly blown out sky, and some Fill Light to bring our details in the seaweed around the ground. In Photoshop, I brought out the details of the sand lines using Color Efex’s Detail Enhancer, and added a vignette.
I finished by sharpening with NIK’s Pro Sharpener tool.
