Amy Babinec on Belleville:

"Belleville consists of a series of paintings produced on top of abandoned student paintings. This project reveals my interest the use of paint to recover memories or secrets through free association. After reading about Asger Jorn altering thrift store paintings, I collected the abandoned paintings left over from undergraduate painting classes. Primarily abstract, simply painted, and modestly sized, these paintings served as a Rorschach test: I saw landscapes and things I remembered from my childhood in Belleville, Illinois, particularly ones I associated with privacy and escape. Unlike my previous work, in which I had tried to pin down my memories into illustrated scenes, I superimposed the memory into the original painting with complete license to scrape, erase, or reorient it. The paintings reflect the dialogue and struggle between my memories and secrets and the strata of paint on the surface."
