Früher waren solche Heiratsmärkte eine schlichte Notwendigkeit, denn die in den familiären Bemühungen sitzengebliebenen Junggesellen und -frauen mussten unter die Haube oder ins Kloster.
Also trafen sich die Übriggebliebenen bei einem “matchmaker”, der dann die Persönlichkeits- und Anforderungsprofile verglich und ein “match”, also eine (weitgehende) Übereinstimmung suchte.
Heute allerdings hat kaum noch ein Besucher des Heiratsmarktes von Lisdoonvarna auch den Drang zum Ehering. Im Gegenteil: So mancher nimmt einen Kilometer vor der Ortsgrenze den Ring ab und stürzt sich dann ins Vergnügen mit dem anderen Geschlecht.

Mitte September startet das Festival wieder :-)
Matchmaking is one of Ireland’s oldest traditions and, for the last couple of hundred years, a good deal of it has taken place in Lisdoonvarna during September and early October.
Matchmakers used their experience to put suitable couples together for an agreed fee….
Today, the only true Matchmaker left is Willie Daly.Willie still believes in the old fashioned method of round the table talks with couples and getting the passion flowing by getting them dancing together.
Nowdays, Lisdoonvarna’s annual festival has evolved into Europe’s largest single’s event. People don’t necessarily come to look for a spouse – they come by the thousands in search of a good time. For the month of September, dances run from 12.00 noon each day and carry on into the small hours of the next morning. Set dancing exhibitions are also a feature of the event and there’s live Irish music in most pubs, although getting to the bar can be quite a task, but don’t worry or hurry, because the music carries on until the early hours!
