Exterior of the Marble House
We spent a day in Newport, Rhode Island (my wife's 48th state visited). Our goal was to check out some of the famous mansions - we picked out The Breakers and Marble House. Good choices. We arrived at The Breakers around opening time and had a lot of it to ourselves. Newport was a major resort for the wealthy barons back in the 1900 time frame; they spent their fortunes on enormous houses based on European chateaus. We were able to take self-guided tours at our on pace; we were both amazed by the opulence and decadence of the rooms and furnishings. The Marble House was also fascinating. We needed a break from the fancy houses so we went lighthouse hunting and found a few. We thought about staying another day in Newport to check out some of the other mansions but rain was catching up to us and it was time to move on. Oh well, there is always next time!
