Martini and Gibson, olives and onions, and...the REAL James Bond

The only difference between the two drinks, of course, is that the latter, on the right, is garnished with cocktail onions, not olives. Absolute purists perhaps might argue that a Martini must be made with gin, not the vodka many prefer. Probably, the REAL James Bond, the ornithologist known for his guidebook, "Birds of the Caribbean," favored gin and tonic at his home in Jamaica, not too far from where the late Ian Fleming began to write his series of slightly camp spy novels, adopting the bold name of the bird man for his secret agent hero.
