Cuttin' Up
Thinking about an old friend and a fine writer: Gilbert Hines. We often appeared at open poetry readings and drank together. One night he brought over a fifth of aquavit, and discussed embarking on a collaboration that took an honest look at race in America. Sadly, we never got to work on that project because Gilbert became ill. A misdiagnosis left him with inoperable prostate cancer. He went into seclusion, and died shortly thereafter.
One of my favorite pieces of Gilbert's was about the community barbershops in the area of 52nd Street in West Philly. So I'm dedicating this image to him.
