A rarity when I started birding (never mind when that was) the Little Egret has gone from strength to strength, first of all becoming a more frequent summer visitor before building up amazing winter roosts numbering in the hundreds and finally colonising to become a regular breeding bird and common sight on watercourses, ponds and lakes of all sizes. This one had been feeding in a recently cleared stew pond at Fleet Pond local nature reserve, Hampshire, before taking fright at passing noisy families to temporarily perch in a pine tree by the pool.
