The Poles made a considerable contribution to the success of the final Cassino battles. The price they paid in blood can be seen in a very fine cemetery that occupies the slope of the overall massif facing the Monastery. Some reckoned them reckless through understandable hate of the enemy: but it was also their careful reconnaissance and analysis of the defensive positions on Point 593 that elucidated its interlocking double concentric rings providing them with the insight to take and then hold it after successive Allied failures. That success unlocked Monte Cassino as a whole as it not only provided observation and a start point for assaults on the Monastery itself but also allowed domination of the remaining German supply routes up to the positions from the Albaneta Farm direction.
