Finally tonight I confirmed what behaviour, particularly approach pattern (deep onto the lawn either side of ours so as to approach the chicken on a line allowing immediate flight without losing time in a turn) has led me to suspect. The black patch on the inside edge of the right ear means our resident, dominant male fox is Black Notch, last positively seen some time ago with a big bite out of his forehead fur and a badly bitten left foreleg. Good to see how completely he has healed - I thought he would end up with a bald patch. Looking splendidly piratical!
