Compound leaf of Horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) showing the leaf-blade palmately divided into separate leaflets
Horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) has a compound palmately divided leaf. This leaf measures about 20 x 20 cm but they may reach 40 x 40 cm. The image shows the palmate compound leaf of Horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), a dicotyledonous plant. The main veins are arranged in a palmate pattern, and the leaf blade is deeply divided between the veins, forming separate leaflets.
Each leaflet has regularly toothed margins. The main veins branch into side veins arranged in a pinnate pattern.
By this stage the axillary bud has opened, but its position at the base of leaf stalk (petiole) is marked by the presence of bud scales.
