Twigs of Horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum)
This drawing shows a typical winter twig of perennial woody dicots, showing lenticels, buds, leaf scars and growth increment. T.
This drawing is of a winter twig of Horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), which has large buds covered in sticky scales, probably a defence against herbivorous insects and birds such as pigeons. The large horseshoe-shaped leaf scars clearly show the scars of the vascular bundles of the leaf-stem (petiole).
Lateral buds have developed into dwarf shoots.
The twig is approximately 20 cm long.
