Presentation of the Colors

The officers conferred with each other as their flags flew.

 

The flag on the left is the Grand Union Flag, so called because it united the stripes representing the thirteen colonies with the Union Jack, signifying that the American Revolution started out as colonists fighting for their rights as British subjects. Less than six months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, in late December 1776, that was a moot point.
