Volkswagen Sharan in Munich Courtyard

Munich has many a courtyard, and they can be full of surprises.

Like this Volkswagen Sharan minivan I found in this courtyard.

The Sharan was the most car-like of the minivans, or multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) that Volkswagen offered in Europe. Unlike the futuristic first-generation model, this second-generation Sharan was more conventionally styled. Power came from either a 1.4-liter or two-liter TSI four or one of two two-liter diesels.

The first-generation Sharan was developed with Ford of Europe, and the Ford version was called the Galaxy. Volkswagen was bound to a promise not to offer the Mark 1 Sharan in North America so it wouldn't compete with Ford's minivans in Ford's home market. By 2010, when the second -generation Sharan debuted (its predecessor debuted in 1995), Ford was out of the minivan business in North America entirely save for its Transit Connect model and VW developed the Mark 2 Sharan on its own. It was still deemed unsuitable for export to the New World. VW ceased production of the Sharan in 2023.
