Treasure Tower . . . Usk Castle

View On Black

Usk Castle is a Norman earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by William fitz Osborn. In the 12th century, Richard 'Strongbow' de Clare founded the stone castle, by adding a commanding three storey, square keep to the motte. A 13th century, inner bailey curtain wall, flanked by large round towers, encases the large flat top motte, with the keep protecting a simple, pointed arch gateway. After Civil War slighting, the 14th century gatehouse in the outer bailey was absorbed in the construction of Castle House. 6 miles north-east is Raglan Castle and 8 miles south is Caerleon Castle.

Gilbert de Clarke's treasure tower dates from 1289 and it housed his revenues . . . It was later supervised by his illustrrious wife and widow Joan of Acre, daughter of Edward 1 . . . it housed " a dog called Coker " which may be the first reference to a cocker spanial . .

Owen Glyndwr's army would have been seen from here, as it beseiged the Castle before the Battle of Usk ( Pwll Melyn ) of 1405
