Trees Sarcophagus - I

This early Christian sarcophagus is decorated with scenes from the New Testament. On either side of a woman in prayer, an “orans”, six scenes depicting Christ’s miracles are arranged within frames formed by olive trees whose foliage shelters doves. On the outermost olive tree, a serpent coiled around the trunk climbs toward a nest filled with eggs.

From left to right of the female figure, the following events are represented: the resurrection of the widow of Nain’s son; the healing of the Canaanite woman; the multiplication of the loaves and fishes; the Wedding at Cana; the healing of the man born blind; and finally, the healing of the paralytic of Capernaum.
