Jerash - XXXX: South Theatre – The heart of the Roman Theatre.

The photo shows the main architectural elements of a Roman theater.

The stage of the theatre, “pulpitum”, supported by a podium, faces the semicircular “orchestra”. The façade of the stage, or “scaena”, is richly decorated by niches and columns. Three monumental entrances towards the "pulpitum" open on the wall of the “scaena”. The central monumental door, or “valva regia”, was used for the principal actor. The two lateral doors, or “portae hospitales”, have reduced dimensions: they were reserved for the entrance of second actors, and for characters of less importance.

Through the three doors it’s possible to see the “portus post scenas”, a portico or passageway behind the scene building.
