Valley of Fire State Park, in the Mojave Desert, lies 50 miles / 80 km north of Las Vegas. The park’s fire-red Aztec sandstone formations derive from the creation of a desert through shifting sand dunes, over 150 million years ago; subsequently, geological uplifting and faulting, and extensive wind / water erosion have created the present landscape.
