Moss and Tiles, Seongnagwon Garden

Seongnagwon is a villa that belonged to Sim Sang-eung, a high-ranking court official under King Cheoljong. It was also used as a secondary palace by Yi Gang, King Uichin (1877-1955) for 35 years. Seongnagwon, resting on a natural landscape, can be divided into three areas according to the natural landscape present in each of them; front garden, inner garden, and rear garden. In the front garden, there is a twin stream or two streams running into one, and a dragon head-shaped mound hugging the inner garden. The inner garden hosts Bonjaenugak Pavilion, Yeongbyeokji Pond, and a waterfall. The rear garden forms a sort of backyard behind a series of buildings, garnished with pine trees, stones and ponds. From its pavilion, one can enjoy the lush natural scenery.
In the lower section west of the building compound, there is a tranquil swamp, and, in the north, a man-made waterfall.
Seongnagwon, one of the few villas still remaining in Seoul, is under official protection, designated as a Historic Site.
