Around the garden today - the pond
Southern hawker dragon fly larva - several of these larvae were in the emergence phase of their lifecycle. They had climbed out of the water and up the iris leaves. This photo shows the empty case (exuvia) after the dragon fly has emerged.. They have spent about 2 years in the pond during this phase. The larva is about one and a half inches long and quite a ferocious predator in the pond. The adults are really quite stunning and I have seen several both male and female flying about. Not managed to get a shot yet of the adults .
