Site of Gallow Lea, place of execution

This was the place of execution lying on the border between Leith and Edinburgh on Leith Walk. A number of notable villains were put to death on this small hillock. The mound was eventually quarried as a source of sand for the building of the New Town resulting in the grand new town stone being cemented together by the charred and wasted fragments of covenanters, warlocks and witches.

Interestingly the owner of the quarry who sold off the sand to the builders of the new town allegedly drank his profits which led to the establishment of an inn which in time was known as the Halfway House.
