Day 789 - Day 059

Lifetime Dream # 36 of my list of 155: I will lead a worship band in the city in which I live. I will continually lead people into the presence of God through music, and move them into a relationship with Him. I will perform at major Christian events which come to town, events at different churches, and I will produce a compact disc of the songs we have written and performed, both originals and cover songs.

My life has changed a lot since I first wrote these dreams out… part of my goals this year is really to re-discover what I believe and why. I’ve talked about that before in my stream, but this dream, well…. It’s hard to explain.

Music has been a huge part of my life; no-brainer there. Some of the gifts that I have, well, they are not developed- they’re a part of how I was made. I was made this way for a reason, and I have always felt that it was to help heal others through music. I guess you could say that’s one of my Mission Statements in life.

I was very moved by Michael W. Smith’s “Worship” albums. They were amazingly deep for my life at the time and what I was going through. I used to write a lot of music for the Christian audience only to find myself rejected by the field for what they saw as “worldly talents”… I was blown away, and burned at the same time. I was once playing guitar in a worship service, and one of the pastors walked up right in front of me (for the entire congregation to see), looked up at the sound booth, pointed at me, and then gave this huge gesture pointing down (to turn my levels down). The funny thing was that I was never in the house speakers, only in the monitors… and even THAT got turned down…

I still love the notion of being able to lead people through a spiritual journey- that has never changed. But what has changed is the means by which I want to do it… I no longer want to play the traditional songs you’d think to hear (okay even though Amazing Grace still moves me and I composed a killer re-write of it once)… I’d rather play songs that have a touch of the Devine in them- whether they are secular or not.

The rules is what kills me in the church environment, and I could share example, after example, after example of how “rules” and “laws’ just kill the spirit… not uplift it. So this is still a dream of mine of course, it’s just not going to happen the way I first saw it and the way some people may expect it…
