Day 562 - Day 197
“Put me out of my misery… I'd do it for you, would you do it for me”
Misery: Soul Asylum, let Your Dim Light Shine
I never knew if David Pirner really intended this song to be about a suicide pact, but I know that he is a bit of a tortured soul. That is a bit of an understatement. You can see it in his eyes and in the way he carries himself. We’re all tortured souls at some point- but some people’s time in misery seems to last longer than others.
When this song came out I remember my jaw dropping. It wasn’t because it was the greatest composition that I’d ever heard in my life… more so it was because he sang exactly what I was feeling. I had been going through a lot of issues and had nonchalantly told myself that if my life was not better by the end of the year, I wouldn’t be around to complain about it the next year. I know that sounds pretty dark, but that’s what I was thinking. This song just ripped me open and shoved that line into my soul over and over… “Put me out of my misery… put me out of my misery…” It didn’t heal me, it made it worse.
That summer actually turned out to be one of the greatest summers of my life. You rarely recognize in the moment that you’re setting precedents. It’s usually only in hind sight that you realize how wonderful a time was. I remember for my birthday I got extremely intoxicated and really I only remember about an hour of the entire night. I very, very vaguely remember crying this song line over and over again. She was pretty concerned because I never really let on that I was in such a misery… and like David Pirner- I can’t always hide my misery.
The next morning I took my final exam still half drunk and aced it. And when I got back from spending the weekend with my family- needless to say she and I had a long talk.
*** Artist Notes ***
The notion was of stabbing someone if they shot me = suicide pact
Lyrics:
They say misery loves company
We could start a company and make misery
Frustrated, Incorporated
Well I know just what you need
I might just have the thing
I know what you'd pay to see
Put me out of my misery
I'd do it for you, would you do it for me
We will always be busy making misery
We could build a factory and make misery
We'll create the cure; we made the disease
Frustrated, Incorporated
Frustrated, Incorporated
Well I know just what you need
I might just have the thing
I know what you'd pay to feel
Put me out of my misery
All you suicide kings and you drama queens
Forever after happily, making misery
Did you satisfy your greed, get what you need
Was it only envy, so empty
Frustrated, Incorporated
Frustrated, Incorporated
Frustrated, Incorporated (put me out of my misery)
Frustrated, Incorporated (I'd do it for you, would you do it for me)
Frustrated, Incorporated (forever after happily)
Frustrated, Incorporated (making misery)
