Day 396 - Day 031

“You know your daddy told me when I left, Jesus would forgive, but a daddy don't forget”

Little Rock: Collin Raye, Extremes

This song speaks of an alcoholic husbands plight as he walks through the depression of loving his family and yet living apart from them while he is in recovery. I am very thankful that I never had to go through this. My father never drank, though I know he had done so in his past. I always had both parents under the same roof and so they still are to this day- so I couldn’t really relate to this story in that sense of a father leaving to cure his alcoholism.

What I can relate to is the line I chose that really speaks to me. I have the most wonderful and beautiful daughter who is getting ready to graduate. I have had quite a few “Oh my God” moments lately. She is very mature and I have treated her like an adult for the past 2-3 years. She is smart and knows how to take care of herself. However, I really do say a prayer for the one man who ever decides to hurt or abuse her. Hopefully she’ll never meet that man, and I will say her current boy friend- I like him. I like the notion that sort of says “Sure Jesus will say ‘no worries’… but I’m not Jesus am I?”

This is the part that I can relate to- a father’s protection of his daughter. And not just how I have always looked out for Chelsea, but how my father was with my sister when she was young. I remember some boys teasing my sister when she was about 5, and my father saw that and got on his bike to race after them. I still remember the look on his face as he whizzed by me chasing them down. When I heard this line in this song, I remembered that story and I remember telling myself “I too will always protect Chelsea!”

*** Artist Notes ***

No, Chelsea is not crying… she is just acting.

Lyrics:

I know I've disappeared a time or two

Along the way I lost me and you

I needed a new town for my new start

I'm sellin' VCRs in Arkansas at a Walmart

I haven't had a drink in 19 days

My eyes are clear and bright with-out that haze

I like the preacher from the Church of Christ

I'm sorry that I cried when I talked to you last night

I think I'm on a roll

Here in Little Rock

I'm solid as a stone

Wait and see

I got just one small problem

Here in Little Rock

Without you

Baby I'm not me

Without you

Baby I'm not me

I don't know why I held it all inside

You must've thought I never even tried

You know your daddy told me when I left

Jesus would forgive, but a daddy don't forget

Lyin' here upon this motel bed

Thoughts of you explode within my head

Like a castle built upon the sand

I let love crumble in my hand
