1938 TDF King of the High Mountains
Stage 8: Thursday, July 14, Pau - Luchon, 193 km
Major ascents: Aubisque, Tourmalet, Aspin, Peyresourde.
GINO BARTALI is the king of the Pyrenees and later the Alps, too. He comes first on the top of the Tourmalet.
Reigning Tour winner Roger Lapébie was not present, and the strongest opponents for Bartali seemed to be the Belgians. Former Tour de France winner André Leducq came in yellow when the peloton reached the Pyrenees, where the expected attack of Bartali came.
He seemed to be heading straight for the yellow jersey in the stage to Luchon, but was beaten back by material problems, and it was the Belgian former mountain king Félicien Vervaecke who took the yellow jersey.
However, in the so called 'Queen Stage" in the Alps, Bartali stunned and conquered the yellow for good
